Beauty of Sailing Eagle Lake

Explore the Unspoiled Beauty of Sailing Eagle Lake

Nestled amidst the breathtaking mountains of northeastern California, Eagle Lake stands as a hidden treasure, waiting to be discovered. Just 26 miles north of Susanville and a short drive from Reno, Nevada, this secluded gem lies in central Lassen County—an isolated valley that has earned its title as “A Lake That Time Forgot.”

Eagle Lake boasts an elevation of 5,100 feet above sea level and spans over 27,000 acres, with more than 100 miles of pristine timbered shoreline. As the second largest natural lake in California, it offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Positioned at the convergence of four major geological provinces, Eagle Lake remains unaffected by their influences over time. From the towering Sierra Nevada to the west and south, to the volcanic Modoc Plateau to the east and north, its diverse landscape captivates visitors with its untouched beauty.

Inhabited by Native American tribes in ancient times, Eagle Lake is now home to a rich array of plant and animal life, including over 80 plant species and 200 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians. Bird watchers can spot the majestic Bald Eagle, among other fascinating species, while deer, coyotes, and other wildlife roam freely.

For sailing enthusiasts, Eagle Lake’s 15-mile reach and prevailing southwesterly afternoon breeze offer unparalleled opportunities for adventure. Whether sailing, windsurfing, or indulging in other water sports, the warm summer waters provide endless enjoyment.

The diverse topographical environment of Eagle Lake has lent itself to a wide array of plant and animal life. Over 80 plant species including spectacular wildflowers have been identified. Over 200 species of mammals, birds and amphibians are in the basin at the same time. Bird watchers can enjoy the western grebe, osprey, white pelicans, swans, and the namesake of the land, the Bald Eagle. Deer, coyotes, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, and an occasional bear or mountain lion roam the basin.

With two marinas, general stores, restaurants, gas stations, and even a 5,000-foot airstrip, Eagle Lake offers all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Managed by the Eagle Lake Interagency Board, the preservation of this unique national treasure is carefully overseen, ensuring its beauty remains intact for future generations to enjoy.

While the lake’s calm mornings offer tranquility, beware of “gale force” winds that may arise by noon, creating challenging conditions for sailors. However, as evening descends, the winds relent, providing a peaceful end to an exhilarating day on the water. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a novice adventurer, Eagle Lake promises an unforgettable experience amidst nature’s splendor.
